The proposal aims to create a simple addition to the beautiful landscape and to the Hermitage of São Lázaro. Two simple, monolithic corten-steel blocks are erected in the ground near the ruins of the hermitage. A white-pebbled path leads visitors from the main road to the site.

The observation tower is a simple, straight line, while the information area leans towards the tower. Like a domino effect, this gesture aims to create a timeless and seemingly endless movement. The space between the leaning block and the tower creates an entrance—a protected space that acts as a filter between the landscape and the building.

The information space is an enormous void with an open roof, through which visitors can see the sky and the tower. The ground is covered with white pebbles. The sound of footsteps on the pebbles evokes the idea of a timeless journey between Monsaraz and the site tower.

The resting and viewing areas are intimate spaces created by “digging” into and removing mass from the block. These spaces have metal shutters that regulate solar heat and shade and, when closed, create a uniform surface.

All the blocks have a corten-steel finish to provide weather protection, while the stairs are made of rusted perforated metal sheets. From the bottom of the stairs, diffuse light guides the visitor towards the top, where, from the lookout platform, they can admire the breathtaking views of Monsaraz and the Alqueva Lake.

The entire ascending and descending journey becomes a journey of light and silence.
